Giza Necropolis

We spent one last day in Cairo visiting the Giza Necropolis and the Egyptian Museum. Once again, “Uncle” Ahmed generously took care of us, shuttling us around and negotiating with the hawkers. I don’t know what we would have done without him.

The Giza Necropolis is home to the “Great Pyramids” (Khufu (Cheops), Khafre, and Menkaure) and the Sphinx. The pyramids date to 2500 BC and are assumed to each have taken 30 years and 100,000 workers to build. Later they decided it was easier to dig a tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

The Egyptian Museum will be a highlight of the trip. It is not often you have the opportunity to see room upon room of well-preserved, human-crafted objects dating back 5,000 years. The museum holds most of the relics from Tutankhamun’s tomb including the nesting coffins and golden funeral mask.
