After Eungella and the leeches, we did a long drive
recrossing the Tropic of Capricorn, this time leaving the tropics. We camped in
Hervey Bay, a gateway to Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. It rained like 6 inches in 2 days. We had planned to go
to Fraser Island, but the rain got us down and we decided not to. Instead we went to several beaches, played in the water park,
played cards and went to see the Book of Life.
Movies are apparently released late in Australia. Australians get a 4-day weekend for Easter and school kids get 2 weeks
off so it is a big end-of-summer holiday.
It seems everyone leaves home for at least a few days. Attractions and accommodations are all booked. I counted 10 aisles of Easter candy in the
Big W department store.
We left the beach for the highlands. We stopped at a cheese factory
in the little town of Kenilworth. We
attempted to go camping but were thwarted by high water in the roadway due to the rain and
ended up driving to Brisbane to ease our transition out of the Jucy camper van.
