Stockholm

We had the good fortune to have Ann-Kristin's father, Hakan Sundell, join us in Stockholm. He was our tour guide, interpreter, trip coordinator and personal trainer (we walked at least 16 miles in 2 days). We had extraordinary dinners with Hakan's friends from medical school. We visited Skansen, the Vasa Museum and Old Town.

The train to Stockholm - we went via the new tunnel/bridge between Denmark and Sweden. The Copenhagen train station structure (pictured) is wood above the columns

Baby  pigs "minigris" at Skansen - these little guys (and I'm sure gals) were more fun than watching puppies

A farm setting at Skansen, a 140 year old outdoor museum with buildings, dwellings and characters in period dress going back 500 years.

A traditional Sami hut at Skansen

A saddle shop at Skansen - the roofs of this period were layers of birch bark covered by sod

Allotment huts at Skansen - during the First World War, citizens were given small plots of land to grow food where some also built garden huts

The ship, Vasa - a very cool museum is constructed around this ship which sunk on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was salvaged 333 years later. It was the first Swedish ship built with 2 gun decks. It foundered in light seas due to inadequate ballast and water entering the lower gun ports.

Statue of Goddess Freya (or Freja?) for Ann-Kristin's cousin's daughter

A crayfish at Hakan's friends, Klas and Britt - the cheese pie that followed was to die for

Hakan at Bolinders Plan 2, his childhood home (3rd or 4th floor center balcony) to age 3

Zoe, Jack and Hakan at Scheelegatan 12, Hakan's childhood home from age 3 on

Scheelegatan 12 - Hakan lived in the top left apartment

Hakan's childhood neighborhood on Scheelegatan - the courthouse shown was across from his apartment

Stockholm City Hall with electric boats for rent in the foreground

Riddarholmskyrkan - the royal burial church
